So I was watching last night my Binge and Purge DVD the Seattle disc and I was remined of the intensity of their live shows. This show was on the “Justice” tour circa 1989. So tune your guitars and try to play along if you dare!
I saw Metallica on their Justice tour back then. Queensryche opened for them. It was awesome. I think I was in the 9th grade, and me and my buddies Jason and Derek went to the show. My ears were gone afterwards, and we were just so psyched. All 3 of us were HUGE Metallica fans (still are, I guess). I think they opened with “Blackened,” but can’t really recall.
They open with “Blackend” on the DVD. He (James) is on a pitch black stage with one spotlight from the back and plays the opening riff by himself ALL DOWN STROKES! Still boggles me to this day. (I think they actually play faster live than they do on the albums – just a theory)
Did you ever watch Some Kind of Monster? It was when I watched it that I realized (or learned I guess) how Kirk Hammet is so out of the loop on lots of the writing, which is masterminded by James and Lars. That most of the time Kirk comes in when most riffs are written and does lead and fills. Don’t know how much true that is, but you do hear Kirk discuss that issue in the video. Which, brings me to what I wanted to say, that James is just sooooo freakin’ cool!!!
Yes! Not only that I own it! (My beautiful wife got it for me)
I think the part your refering to is when Bob Rock is telling Lars to play something a certain way and he says something to the effect of “your telling me what to play??” and Kirk responds with “welcome to my life for the past 20 years!”
If you look back at the insides of the album covers the credit for Music and Lyrics is predominantly James and Lars.
I love the one bit where Lars and James are fighting over some track, cuz Lars is saying it sounds “stock,” and James is like, “what?! stock?” They just go crazy with each other. Lars is just a crazy genius. I’m gonna have to watch that again soon. And, whatever happened to the therapist guy? They just kinda dump him, didn’t they?
I love millions of metal bands like tool, slipknot, slayer and out of all of them METALLICA has got to be the f****** best. you proably wouldnt be hearing that every day from an eleven year old like myself
you know, metallica is what it is.they are themselves on the stage.that’s what distinguishes them from other bands.they are so friendly, and you feel comfortable when you hear their meaningful music.james with his rough voice kirk and robert with their magical fingers and lars…let’s not talk about him, best is not enough for him.that’s metallica.when you hear unforgiven for example, it is new, although it’s recorded 10 years ago.metallica will remain in memories and they and their music will not be forgotten.i love them…
